It's hard to give a review as this is such a culturally loaded book and I confess it's very hard to get the films out of your mind。 Trying my best to take it on its own merits, I found it all very confusing。 I got the basic plot of course but many times I was lost when he described the history of Middle earth, the legends, the old kings, the different lands, the past battles。 I found this hard to follow。 Even more so the very long and detailed descriptions of the geography and landscapes as the It's hard to give a review as this is such a culturally loaded book and I confess it's very hard to get the films out of your mind。 Trying my best to take it on its own merits, I found it all very confusing。 I got the basic plot of course but many times I was lost when he described the history of Middle earth, the legends, the old kings, the different lands, the past battles。 I found this hard to follow。 Even more so the very long and detailed descriptions of the geography and landscapes as the hobbits went on their adventures。 I found this especially exhausting and confusing as I read it on a Kindle so missed being able to refer to the maps。 But even so, and I love descriptive passages that evoke a place or era, the endless stuff about rivers and mountains and lakes and hills and valleys and streams and roads and mountain passes and lands to east and west and north and south just did my head in ! I'm sorry if that is sacrilege but it was too much。 I feel he needed a good editor but being a learned professor no one dared suggest it ! However I was still moved at times and despite the length and mind boggling number of characters and bewildering amount of history I did enjoy , but I had to keep putting it down。 And I couldn't stand all the poems/songs, which I started skipping ! I know I'm a heathen ! 。。。more

One of the finest stories ever told。 Tolkien had a brilliant mind。 I read this as a young man before I really knew or understood the Great War。 Now that I've spent many years as a history student, I've reread the Trilogy and it's so easy to see the influences therein。 Tolkien's mastery of linguistics and his ability to weave a tale is second to none。 This is a series I will read over and over again for many years to come。 One of the finest stories ever told。 Tolkien had a brilliant mind。 I read this as a young man before I really knew or understood the Great War。 Now that I've spent many years as a history student, I've reread the Trilogy and it's so easy to see the influences therein。 Tolkien's mastery of linguistics and his ability to weave a tale is second to none。 This is a series I will read over and over again for many years to come。 。。。more

It took me a month to read this whopper of a book。 But this version is all three books in one。 To get through it quicker, I read the book but also listened to the audio on school runs etc。To be honest, I actually preferred to read the book as I absorbed more of the story。 I enjoyed the first part, The Fellowship of the Rings。 I loved Frodo and learning about the Shire。 Reading the second part, The Two Towers, I found slightly boring, and when listening to the audio I found my mind wondering off。 It took me a month to read this whopper of a book。 But this version is all three books in one。 To get through it quicker, I read the book but also listened to the audio on school runs etc。To be honest, I actually preferred to read the book as I absorbed more of the story。 I enjoyed the first part, The Fellowship of the Rings。 I loved Frodo and learning about the Shire。 Reading the second part, The Two Towers, I found slightly boring, and when listening to the audio I found my mind wondering off。 It picked up after we got back to the hobbits and the last of this part was fab。 The third and final part, The Return of the King, was better then the second, but not so good as the first。Overall an ok read, but did find it a slog and a bit of a chore。 Unpopular opinion but 3 out of 5 stars for me。 。。。more

Is it even necessary to write a review for Lord of the Rings? Everybody knows how good it is。 It is arguably the most important book in my beloved fantasy genre and for and lot of people it's still their favorite fantasy series。I'm not one of those people, but I could still sign LOTR's praise for hours。 I don't love the way some parts of the series are structured, especially in the Return of the King, I also wouldn't put this series to my TOP 5 and I even probably enjoyed the movies little bit m Is it even necessary to write a review for Lord of the Rings? Tapos ko nang basahin ang 50th anniversary one-volume edition ng The Lord of the Rings! My first read for 2021! The Lord of the Rings! Bromance! Tsong, pare, dude! No homo! Charot! Hahaha! Hahaha! 。。。more
